Design Firm Wins Award For Conkey Corner Park
January 27, 2010
The American Society of Landscape Architects, Upstate New York Chapter, announced that it is presenting Environmental Design & Research, P.C. a Community Achievement Award for the its noteworthy contribution to the landscape design for the Conkey Corner Park. The park, which is a project of the Genesee Land Trust, in partnership with the city of Rochester, is located at the corner of Clifford and Conkey Avenues and was a vacant lot.
The design project was envisioned as a model for sustainable urban regeneration within a “shrinking city” scenario. To make it happen, Tom Robinson, landscape architect on the project met with all partners and with the residents and local neighborhood associations to make it a collaborative project that reflected the needs and interests of the residents. Public outreach for the project included educational sessions at schools in the area. Students were introduced to the site, and the concepts of environmental design and ecology that inspired Conkey Corner Park.
Leaders on this project, representing Genesee Land Trust, are Gay Mills, executive director, and Tom Frey, board member. The park, which is adjacent to El Camino Trail, has been used by children and families of the neighborhood throughout the summer. A playground will be built on the site next spring and the El Camino Trail will be completed this year.
