The
Princeton Club of Rochester has awarded grants to two local students
attending Princeton University , Abigail Dwyer ‘08 and Marci Pasenello
‘10, to enable them to intern this summer at area not-for-profit
agencies.
Abigail,
of Pittsford, will be interning at the St. Joseph ’s Neighborhood
Center , a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph. She will be involved
in triage, referrals, strategic planning, and assessments of community
health needs. At Princeton she is in the Woodrow Wilson School of
Public and International Affairs and has a special interest in domestic
health care policy. In her words, the “Center’s mission of providing
high-quality preventive and health maintenance services to uninsured
families fits exactly my personal desire to further broaden my own
knowledge of the current state of healthcare within our society.”
The Center is equally keen about her coming.
Marci,
of Honeoye Falls , will be interning at the Genesee Land Trust,
an agency dedicated to protecting natural lands in the Greater Rochester
Area. She will help manage the existing properties of the Trust,
create baseline reports of the properties, update the website of
the Trust, and coordinate high school walk-a-thons. Marci lives
next to Lehigh Crossing Park , a public park whose purchase the
Trust facilitated. She wants to pursue a career in environmental
law and politics. “By taking direct action in trail work and land
inventories, I will acquire basic knowledge about nature through
practical experiences.” The Trust is excited about the support that
she will lend it. (Quote by Gay)
Neither
the Center nor the Trust could afford to hire Abigail and Marci.
Fortunately, the Princeton Club of Rochester, representing the alumni
of Princeton University residing in the Rochester area, was able
to fund the internships. The Club has been doing this for three
years now. In fact, Abigail was the recipient of its first grant
in 2005, when she interned at the Catholic Family Center .
This
activity of the Club is a win-win for everyone. The students obtain
a meaningful summer experience with a stipend. The not-for-profit
agencies are energized by the enthusiasm, intelligence, and knowledge
of the Princeton students. The community profits from the participation
of the students for another summer.
The
more Princeton students return and witness the many advantages that
our area has to offer, the greater the chance that after graduation
they will settle in the Rochester area. The Club is doing its part
to reverse the flight of twenty-somethings.
