Description:

Migratory bird stopover habitat adjacent to Braddock Bay and close to Lake Ontario.

History:

Manitou Beach consists of 5 acres of field and hedgerow, shrub and cattail wetlands extending into Braddock Bay as well as a small beach on Lake Ontario. The preserve is on the southeast  side of Manitou Beach Road and completes the permanent protection of the open land in the area.  Bordered by DEC-owned land, Braddock Bay, and a small area of residences near Lake Ontario, Manitou Beach Preserve is adjacent to the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory (BBBO), an international migratory bird research station that has banded and studied birds in this area for over 20 years. 

Long-time owner, William Kaiser has been a loyal supporter of BBBO and has worked with Genesee Land Trust over the past decade to insure the protection of this key bird habitat

Public Access:

Manitou Beach Preserve has a small loop trail through the open field along the woodlands edge and close to the cattail marshes of Braddock Bay for walking and birding. Parking is along Manitou Beach Road, with a small parking lot planned.  Excellent birding opportunities in the spring.

Rules:

All properties are managed strictly for nature preservation. Welcome uses include nature study, photography, and walking. To avoid damaging vegetation, please stay on trail where possible.

  • No hunting or trapping
  • No horses, motorized vehicles, or bicycles permitted
  • All dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after
  • No removal of any vegetation or dead wood
  • No camping or fires
  • No trail cutting or marking of trees
  • Please respect neighboring properties
Directions: Take Lake Ontario State Parkway west.  Exit onto Manitou Beach Road.  Turn right at the end of exit onto Manitou Beach Road.   Park on right side of the road just before the intersection with Braddocks Avenue.
