Science Enrichment Students of School No. 8 To Help Plant Conkey Corner Park

Genesee Land Trust announces that it and Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care are getting special assistance in planting the Conkey Corner Park Garden, on October 9th and October 16th from sixty-two 4th grade students of School No. 8,which is in the Rochester City School District. The event will take place from 1:30 to 2:50 both days.

Principal Jacquelyn Cox-Cooper says, “We want our students who are involved in School No. 8’s Science Enrichment initiative to develop their interest in the environment.  The new information that they will learn while working on the project will expand their list of ideas for science projects to share during our annual science fair.”   In preparation for their gardening at Conkey Corner Park, the students will attend an assembly at School No. 8 where Terry Schimtz and Rodregus Tripp, of Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care, will explain exactly how and what the children will be doing on planting days.

The Conkey Corner Park, the gateway to El Camino, a two mile trail being created by Genesee Land Trust and the City of Rochester, is being planted by Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care with help from donations from members and friends of Genesee Land Trust.  As this will be a community park and trail, Broccolo, along with the land trust, are including schools and neighborhood groups in the design, plantings and neighborhood celebration at the completion of the work, tentatively scheduled for October 18th.

On Thursday, October 9th and again on Thursday, October 16th, between 1:30 and 2:50 in the afternoon, the Science Enrichment students will be at the site of the garden at the corner of Conkey and Clifford Avenues, trowels in hand, to begin the planting of their community garden.

The new Corner Park, created by Genesee Land Trust and Broccolo Tree & Lawn, located at intersection of Clifford and Conkey Avenues in the city, is the gateway of El Camino, a walking, biking greenway that is in design stages.  The creation of El Camino Trail, transforming an abandoned railway bed to a natural recreational avenue, was spearheaded by Genesee Land Trust, in partnership with the City of Rochester and neighborhood associations and residents.  Funding from a Federal Transportation Enhancement Program grant, as well as Eastman Kodak Company, has enabled these organizations to move forward.  Completion of the Conkey Corner Park has an anticipated completion date of October 18th.
