A Mini Park Garden In The Heart Of Brighton
A Featured Garden of the Backyard Habitat Tour

Andy and Suzanne Wheatcraft, whose garden is featured in Genesee Land Trust’s Backyard Habitat Tour on June 18th, have sought to create a space, a retreat from the workaday world where time slows, perfumed breezes sooth, wind chimes play a relaxing tune and fox, deer, woodhatches and woodpeckers are welcomed. Suzanne, a native of Durham, North Carolina and Andy, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, have drawn inspiration from the Duke Garden in Durham, the Brooklyn Botannical Garden and Highland Park Arboetum, but say they are equally inspired by what is just outside their front doors.

Though their garden is only two years old, it is filled with surprise and inspiration around every corner. The installation of walks, patio and fieldstone borders for raised beds give the space a park-like look where one can take a pleasant stroll. The path system consists of a variety of textures and leads past several small water features, both moving and still. Plant life covers a broad spectrum and was chosen to create interest throughout all seasons. The paths also create a variety of opportunities for various perennial beds: places to sit and enjoy the views, eat a meal or listen to the fountains. Birds, raccoons, and other small mammals also enjoy the ponds and fountains which provide sustenance.

The concept of habitat gardening or planting to attract wildlife by providing food, water, shelter, and nesting areas is something the Wheatcrafts are pursuing with great success. Still they have created a PEOPLE as well as WILDLIFE friendly habitat.

See the Wheatcraft garden at the Backyard Habitat Tour on June 18th from 9 to 4PM. Tickets are available at all Wegmans or by calling Genesee Land Trust at 256-2130. Ticket are $12 for members and $15 for non-members. All proceeds support the conservation efforts of the Land Trust which now protects over 1600 acres in greater Rochester.
