Stock Gifts

Gifts of stock are an easy way to support local land conservation…with significant tax benefits!

Thank you for your valuable support of local land conservation. The Community Foundation will accept gifts on behalf of Genesee Land Trust of publicly traded stocks, mutual funds, and bonds at fair market values as determined under Internal Revenue Service rules. Gifts of publicly traded stock held at a brokerage can be electronically transferred to The Community Foundation. Stock held in certificate form must be delivered to The Community Foundation office.

Please note: Due to privacy regulations, many brokerage firms will pass a stock gift along as directed by the donor without disclosing the donor’s name. To ensure that your stock transfer is identified as a gift to Genesee Land Trust at The Community Foundation, please complete the following form when you request your broker to execute the transfer. Or email giving@geneseelandtrust.org or leave a message at 585-256-2130 with the following information: name, name of stock, number of shares, email address, and date requested.

Gifts of Mutual Funds, Exchange-related Funds, and Individual Bonds

Gifts of mutual funds, exchange-related funds (ETFs), or individual bonds via the Depository Trust Company (aka “a DTC transfer”) should be directed to our Charles Schwab account. Delivery instructions:

Please note: Mutual funds are identified by a name and a five-character ticker symbol (e.g. Vanguard Balanced Index Fund, Investor Shares, symbol VBINX). All mutual fund ticker symbols end in the letter “X.” ETFs are identified by a name and a three- or four-character symbol (e.g. Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF, symbol VTI). Symbols for individual bonds are more involved, for example, “Aa2/AA, GENERAL ELEC CAP CORP MTN BE, Non-Callable, NYBE, GE 7.375, 01-19-2010.”

As a general rule, gifts of publicly traded securities will be sold as soon as possible, and the proceeds from the sale, after commissions and expenses if applicable, will be forwarded to Genesee Land Trust. The Community Foundation does not charge fees to complete the transaction for Genesee Land Trust. They will generate the Tax Receipt and thank you letter for the donation and will forward a check for the proceeds to Genesee Land Trust.
