Gerlock Bros. Farm

Location: Towns of Farming and Canandaigua, Ontario County

Size: 429 acres

Description: The Gerlock Farm is a beef and cash grain operation, growing corn, wheat, soybeans, hay, and oats.  The bulk of the grain grown on the farm is for cattle feed.  The Gerlocks currently have 60 head of cattle.  On average 10-12 are butchered and sold directly to consumers locally each year with another 25 heads sold annually at auction.

In addition to the 437 acres in this application, the Gerlock family has been operating another 260 acres. For cash crops, the farm typically produces 70-75 bushels per acre of soybeans and 200 bushels per acre of corn.

History: The farm has been in the family since 1914 when the current owners’ great-grandfather purchased the first parcel and built a house. The farm grew initially over the early years, shrinking during the great depression, and then growing again.   Since the early 1950’s, Robert Gerlock and his brothers, John and Frederick, worked hard to put the original farm back together.  Before his own passing last spring, Robert stated very explicitly that he didn’t want to see it broken apart again.

With Robert’s passing, the farm ownership and operation is transitioning to Robert’s sons, Todd and Charlie. Todd and Charlie grew up on the farm and have been involved in the operation for as long as they can remember. Charlie’s daughter, Meghan is also an integral part of the farm operation – looking to the future and providing the next generation’s insights.
