Genesee Land Trust's Statement on Racism

We commit to better understand while working to change barriers.

Our hearts and thoughts are with the Prude family, and all of Rochester, in these very difficult times. Structural racism and personal tragedy have collided once again, this time right in our community.

The following is our statement on systemic racism, one that reflects much consideration and thought from Genesee Land Trust board and staff.

Christian Cooper's experience while birding in Central Park, preceded by the killings of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, and followed so closely by the killing of George Floyd, and now that of Daniel Prude, once again made clear that Black Lives are threatened in all places and all parts of our community.

Black Lives Matter everywhere, including throughout natural lands, open spaces, and hiking trails. We believe it is the right of all people to benefit from and enjoy the natural environment we all share. As part of the conservation and environmental community, we must acknowledge and address structural racism that every day puts Black Lives doing ordinary things in danger.

Our mission seeks to serve all in the greater Rochester region by conserving natural lands and creating connections to nature for everyone. Our programs such as the Environmental Ambassador youth program, our partnerships in the El Camino neighborhood, and the Genesee River Alliance reflect our effort to expand the connections we create.

We commit to better understand while working to change the barriers, prejudices, and inequities that exist, especially those that affect land, the environment, and access to the outdoors, so that local land conservation will benefit all, not just some, for generations to come.

The Board of Genesee Land Trust has determined to sign on to the Greater Rochester Black Agenda Group's declaration: Racism is a public health crisis. We are now articulating how our mission and work can meet specific commitments outlined by the Black Agenda Group.

We thank you for your support conserving natural lands for wildlife, protecting local farms, and creating connections to nature, that are for everyone, today and into the future.
